- Anyone can do it
- Time
- About 45 minutes (arrive 15-20 min early, stay a bit after)
- Arrive
- 15-20 min before the service
- Your spot
- Main entrance / front doors
- Hand out
- A smile + a bulletin
- Stay after
- Yes, the best chats happen then
Quick start
- 1
Get there early and claim your door
Be in place 15-20 minutes before the service so the very first person through the door is welcomed, not walking into an empty lobby.
- 2
Give everyone the four gifts
A smile, a word of welcome, a handshake or friendly wave, and a bulletin. That's the whole job, and it lands every time.
- 3
Walk guests, don't point
If someone looks new or unsure, don't just point toward the restroom or kids' check-in, take a few steps and lead them there yourself.
- 4
Read the room
Some guests want to chat, some want to slip quietly into a seat before the first song. Follow their lead, friendly but never smothering.
- 5
Stick around after the closing song
The minutes right after the service are when people open up. Be available to answer questions and point them to a connect card or the welcome center.
Watch first
Being a greeter is the simplest, highest-impact role in the building. Long before anyone hears the worship music or the sermon, they decide whether this feels like a place they belong, and that decision happens at the door with you. You don't need to know theology, run anything, or have answers to hard questions. You just need to be glad people came.
- If a guest looks lost
- Walk them there yourself
- If they're in a hurry
- Smile, bulletin, let them go
- If you don't know an answer
- Find a staff member or pastor, don't guess
- If it's raining
- Hold the door and offer an umbrella walk-out after
- Restock bulletins for the next service
- Tell the team about any guest who needed follow-up
- Note anything that ran low (bulletins, connect cards, umbrellas)
- Return your name tag or greeter badge to the bin
