Bracket / Head Table

How to Run the Bracket / Head Table

You're the air-traffic control of the tournament. Brackets are seeded in the software after weigh-ins; you print the bout cards, feed each mat its next match, and record results so winners and losers flow to the right next round. Stay organized and the whole event runs on time.

Quick start

  1. 1

    Lock the brackets after weigh-ins

Once weigh-ins close and seeds are set in the software, finalize and print the first round of bout cards.

  2. 2

Feed every mat its next match

Keep a card waiting for each mat at all times — an idle mat is the head table's job to prevent.

  3. 3

    Record results as cards return

Enter each winner the moment a card comes back. The software then pairs the next round automatically.

  4. 4

    Sort finished cards by round

Group completed cards by round so you can find any match instantly. Tidy table, smooth tournament.

  5. 5

    Watch winners and losers split

Winners climb the championship bracket; wrestlers who lose drop to consolation to wrestle for place. Don't lose anyone.

Watch first

The head table is the nerve center of a wrestling tournament. Everything sequences from here: which match goes to which mat, in what order, and where each wrestler goes after they win or lose. It's a fast, detail-heavy seat, which is why it usually goes to experienced volunteers — but the work itself is simple once the brackets are seeded. You print cards, hand them out, take results back, and let the software do the pairing math.

Championship bracket
Winners advance (single elimination)
Consolation bracket
Wrestlers who lose keep going to place (3rd, 4th, etc.)
Bye
Free advance when the bracket isn't a clean 8/16/32
Bout card
The slip for one match — winner circled, returned to you
Round robin
Often used for very small brackets (4 or fewer)
  • Brackets finalized and seeded after weigh-ins
  • First-round cards printed and out to every mat
  • A 'next match' card waiting for each mat
  • Every returned card entered before it's set aside
  • Completed cards filed by round
  • Byes verified so no wrestler is skipped or double-booked
