Officials training
Certified parents run our races
Several race-day jobs need a certified official, and races run far better when more parents are certified. The fall clinic is the place to start. No ski racing experience is needed, and testing is optional.

Study groups before the clinic
Region 1's certified instructors run casual study nights on Zoom from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. Drop in any time; the Zoom link is in the region's October update.
- Chief of race and referee, with Caryn Jones: October 13, 15, 20 and 23
- Chief of timing, with Chuck Robb: October 14, 21 and 28
- Using the competition guide and the study guides, with Trevor Davis: October 27
- The competition official exam, taken as a group, with Trevor Davis: October 29
How certification works
- Register for a certification weekend: this fall at Buck Hill, or in the spring, date to come.
- Read the study guides on the U.S. Ski & Snowboard alpine officials page. Until this season's guides are posted, last season's are the place to start.
- Join a study group.
- Pass the exam. Testing is optional if you only want to learn.
- Shadow an experienced official and practice on race days.
- Take the job on your own.
- Move up within your certification.
Once certified, you keep a U.S. Ski & Snowboard alpine officials membership, stay current with SafeSport and the other training requirements, and attend one officials update each year.
Volunteers who fill certified positions on at least three race days in a season can ask Region 1 to reimburse their alpine officials license.

Gate judge training
A gate judge watches a set of gates and records any racer who misses one. It is a good first job and needs no certification. You meet the chief of gates 30 minutes before the first run, take your place on the hill, and after the run the chief of gates collects your card. If you recorded a fault, you stay through the 15-minute protest period.
